IndiGo enters wide-body space with 30 Airbus A350-900 aircrafts

IndiGo will soon enter the wide-body aircraft space as it is anticipated to place an order for 30 firm A350-900 aircraft, which will help the airline cater to a broad network. The aircraft will be powered by a Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine.

The aircraft’s unmatched capability along with the efficiency of the Trent XWB engine will allow IndiGo to open up a new direction in the Indian aviation industry.

“Today’s historic moment marks a new chapter for IndiGo and will further shape the future of the airline and for Indian aviation at the same time. This reaffirms IndiGo’s belief in, and commitment to, the growth of India, and in our strategic partnership with Airbus,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo.

Currently, IndiGo operates more than 350 jets. Last year, it placed an order for 500 aircraft, the largest single-aircraft purchase ever made by an airline to Airbus. The unfulfilled backlog of A320 Family orders stands at around 1000 aircraft which are still to be delivered beyond the current decade. IndiGo order-book has a mixed fleet of A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321LX airplanes.

The aircraft’s exact design will be decided later on, and the first deliveries are expected to start in 2027. Moreover, IndiGo has the right to purchase another 70 Airbus A350 Family aircraft, provided that the conditions are fulfilled, at their discretion, for possible needs in the future.

In the year 2023, IndiGo served more than 100 million passengers on its aircraft. IndiGo’s current fleet, in addition to the 989 A320 Family aircraft still on order, and today’s order for wide-body aircraft, things are bright for IndiGo to grow and strengthen its unmatched network.
